Das Ziel des Sonderforschungsbereichs/Transregio 248 „Grundlagen verständlicher Software-Systeme“ ist Grundlagenforschung für eine verständliche und nachvollziehbare cyber-physische Welt.
Ob in autonomen Fahrzeugen oder Industrie 4.0, im Smart Home oder in den Smart Cities der Zukunft – Computerprogramme wirken zunehmend an Aktivitäten und Entscheidungen mit, die den Menschen direkt betreffen. Allerdings ist unser Verständnis, wie derart komplexe Systeme interagieren und welche Gründe zu welchen Entscheidungen führen, völlig unzureichend.
Je mehr solche cyber-physischen Technologien unser Leben durchdringen und bestimmen, desto schwerer wiegt dieser graduelle Verlust an Verständnis und Kontrolle. Es fehlt den Systemen an Mechanismen, ihr eigenes Verhalten dem Benutzer plausibel zu machen. Und selbst für Experten ist es heutzutage praktisch unmöglich, wissenschaftlich fundierte Aussagen zu den präzisen Gründen für eine bestimmte Entscheidung – oder zur Verantwortlichkeit im Fall von Fehlfunktionen – zu machen.
Der zentrale Grund dafür ist, dass gegenwärtige computergestützte Systeme keine inhärenten Konzepte besitzen, ihr eigenes Verhalten zu erklären. Sie berechnen Ergebnisse und reichen diese weiter, sie sind aber nicht dafür entworfen, diese zu erläutern. Sie sind nicht verständlich.
Durchgängig verständliche Systeme stellen eine bisher weitestgehend ungelöste wissenschaftliche Herausforderung dar. Der SFB/Transregio 248 nimmt sich dieser Herausforderung an und legt die fundamentalen wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen für compu
tergestützte Systeme der Zukunft, die ihre Funktionalität und ihr Verhalten erläutern. Wir nennen diese Perspicuous Systems (Verständliche Systeme).
