Summary

In the operating room, physicians have various information needs related to preoperative (image) data, including visualizations, annotations, measurements and preoperatively planned access paths and resection strategies. Like the car driver not only benefits from planning a trip with appropriate maps, but from support while driving, surgeons benefit from support in particular in case of complex interventions and complications that may arise. However, they have to wear gloves to be sterile. User interfaces have to be designed with this essential constraint in mind. In this talk, Professor Preim presents recent developments in surgeon-computer interaction, including touch-screen input, freehand gestures and use of the myoelectric gesture control. Evaluations were performed to investigate the feasibility and the acceptance. This talk is based on joint work of the recently established “computer-assisted surgery” group and the “visualization” research group in the framework of the research campus STIMULATE.
