In almost all application areas the number of digital documents and data is growing steadily. Organizing and managing the growing data in order to facilitate efficient, needs-based access is a major challenge. The foundations for such solutions are provided by information retrieval (IR) concepts and technologies. In addition to the more technical algorithms and data structures which form the basis of appropriate retrieval applications, the human is a very significant factor. The research field “Human-Computer Information Retrieval” (HCIR) takes up this aspect and combines classical IR research with findings and concepts in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI).

Our research project “Interactive Information Retrieval” deals with various aspects of human-computer interaction in information search. Some specific subprojects are briefly described in the following.

Subprojects

CollabTiles

As part of the subproject “CollabTiles” different aspects of collaborative search with mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) are investigated and scenarios of different roles and tasks within a group of searchers are considered. We especially concentrate on awareness support through status information and contextual feedback from search queries.

Semantic Search

Interaction and visualization techniques for large, semantic data collections are still a great challenge. In this subproject, approaches for appropriate data visualization and interaction are developed, with the aim of facilitating efficient search and working with large semantic data by a meaningful reduction of the complexity.

Eye-Tracking Studies

Mobile and stationary eye-tracking technology can provide valuable information on user search behavior and give relevance feedback. Among other things, we investigated the reading behavior in information search on the Web in a user study to evaluate a just-in-time retrieval approach in cooperation with the Chair of Media Informatics at the University of Passau.

IR with novel interaction techniques

In combination with novel interaction techniques and input / output modalities, a completely new quality of dealing with data arises, as well as completely new possibilities of request formulation and reformulation and the presentation of results. We investigate possibilities of realizing efficient information retrieval in multi-device environments, as well as AR and VR environments.
