The ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (short CHI) took place in Montréal, QC, Canada from April 21 to 26. Five of us represented the Interactive Media Lab Dresden by presenting nine contributions in total (see news). One highlight certainly was the presentation of our full paper When David Meets Goliath: Combining Smartwatches with a Large Vertical Display for Visual Data Exploration. The paper is the result of a cooperation of Tom Horak and Raimund Dachselt with Karthik Badam and Niklas Elmqvist from the University of Maryland and received a Honorable Mention Award at ACM CHI 2018.
The conference started on Saturday where Raimund Dachselt and Ricardo Langner co-organized the CHI workshop Data Visualization on Mobile Devices (MobileVis ’18). In this workshop, Wolfgang Büschel presented his work Investigating Link Attributes of Graph Visualizations in Mobile Augmented Reality and Tom Horak discussed his work on Hierarchical Graphs on Mobile Devices: A Lane-based Approach. In addition, Konstantin Klamka contributed to the CHI workshop (Un)Acceptable!?! — Re-thinking the Social Acceptability of Emerging Technologies with his article The Future Role of Visual Feedback for Unobtrusive eTextile Interfaces.
Furthermore, we presented two CHI demos on monday evening in the demonstration session. Wolfgang showcased the work Demonstrating Reality-Based Information Retrieval that shows the prototype of our awarded CHIIR’18 article Here and Now: Reality-based Information Retrieval. In addition, Tom demonstrated the accompanying prototype of the work When David Meets Goliath: Combining Smartwatches with a Large Vertical Display for Visual Data Exploration.
In the poster rotations on Tuesday and Wednesday, Konstantin presented his Late Breaking Work ARCord: Visually Augmented Interactive Cords for Mobile Interaction, while Aman Shankar Mathur discussed the latest research on DebugAR: Mixed Dimensional Displays for Immersive Debugging of Distributed Systems. DebugAR was a cooperation between the Interactive Media Lab Dresden, the CGV lab at TU Dresden as well as the MPI SWS in Kaiserslautern.
In short, the CHI was a very successful conference for our group with nice research discussions and a great accompanying program as can be seen in our photo gallery. Next year’s CHI will take place in Glasgow, UK.
