This year’s IEEE VR conference took place in Saint-Malo, France, from March 7th to March 13th. The Interactive Media Lab joined the event, represented by Mats Ole Ellenberg and Katja Krug.

They demonstrated Endomersion – An immersive remote guidance and feedback system for robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Wearing a head-mounted display, visitors of the demo booth had the opportunity to assume the role of a remote medical expert and give real-time advice to our surgery team in Dresden, Germany, across a distance of almost 1500 km. Visitors could annotate the output of the endoscope camera, share additional medical images and remotely control the robot arm that holds the endoscope.

This system was developed in the context of the CeTI project. It was interdisciplinary joint work with the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT/UCC) and the Universitätsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus Dresden.

Katja and Mats received valuable feedback and had many great conversations. We are looking forward to the next IEEE VR!
